It is modular and extensible but also has a very flexible simulation environment allowing varying configurable vehicles, sensors, traffic density and weather conditions. The simulator is divided into 8 modules: Roads, Infrastructure, Road Network, Environment, Vehicles, Non-Vehicle Traffic, Drivers, and Analysis. Road
module describes the roads structure, hazards, and occupancy. Road Network informs about current and future road traffic. The environment module allows researchers or engineers to specify weather effects and time of the day. The infrastructure module defines the positioning and state of the elements
of the road such as traffic lights and signage. Non-Vehicle Traffic module controls cyclists and pedestrians behavior and destination. Dangerous situations can be simulated using this
module to test driving algorithms in front of unusual pedestrian behaviors. Driver modules consist of three components: Vehicles defining the car model and the configuration of sensors, Control and Dynamics providing information about brake inputs, throttle, and steering as well as vehicle dynamics
such as slipping for instance, Perception describing the agent surrounding environment with information like detection time, classification error rate and more. Analysis module returns
information regarding velocities, positions and behaviors of other vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians participating in the traffic. The simulator is suitable for the development of both modular and end-to-end deep-driving models.

- Airsim:

Airsim, like Carla, is also a very realistic open-source simulator based on Unreal Engine 4 developed by Microsoft. While it was initially intended for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) simulation only, the authors recently introduced the support for car agents. With Airsim, the goal is to bridge the gap between reality and simulation by proposing a high-fidelity simulation of the real world. It is designed to be flexible and easily extensible, in a way that it can be added to any Unreal Engine project, or even integrated with Unity projects. There are already many rich generated environments contributed by Microsoft and the broader community available through the simulator marketplace. Many sensors used in the industry for autonomous vehicles such as LiDAR, GPS, IMU, cameras, etc. are offered. Unlike Carla, which return processed and fused depth data, Airsim provides raw 3D point clouds via its LiDAR API, making it more challenging for computer vision applications.
